Liposuction is one of the safest and most proven methods of sculpting our bodies to a desired image. It can be done to remove excess fat from any part of the body. Most common areas are: abdomen, flanks, back, hips, thighs, knees, arms, neck, chest, and breast area in both men and women.
Liposuction – What to Expect
Dr. Newman has a specialized technique that enables patients to avoid the use of general anesthesia during liposuction. Most patients are given an oral medication and have minimal discomfort during the procedure. The incision sites are very small and Dr. Newman prefers to place them in hidden areas to minimize any visual scarring. Prior to removing any of the fat cells, Dr. Newman will use a fine cannula to inject a tumescent solution into the area where the fat will be removed. This mixture of anesthetic and water helps prevent bleeding and provides protection to tissues that might otherwise be damaged during liposuction. Use of the tumescent technique is what makes liposuction one of the safest surgeries performed in the world today. After the tumescent solution has been injected Dr. Newman will gently remove the excess fat using a specific technique that minimized the risks and ensures a smooth and even result.
Lipo-sculpting and Lipo-correction are other forms of liposuction that can be done to address specific areas. This can be done to smooth out uneven areas or to help sculpt the desired figure.
Our protocol is to provide patient happiness which includes impeccable safety, patient comfort, tact, and quality results.
Liposuction FAQS
DO I NEED TO GO UNDER GENERAL ANESTHESIA?
This is not required with the specific technique Dr. Newman uses. You will have local anesthesia around the treated area and we can also provide an oral sedative to help you relax.
WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME?
This varies case to case but you can expect to have some soreness for about 2 weeks. Most patients only require Tylenol for pain relief as the soreness will be similar to muscle soreness after an intense workout. You can do light exercise but try to keep it minimal, do not return to the gym or strenuous activity unless advised by the doctor for earlier than 2 weeks. We do encourage patients to walk around throughout the day to help with the healing, but a light walk- not one that will significantly increase your heart rate.
CAN I DO MULTIPLE AREAS AT ONCE?
In most cases, YES. Often times the abdomen and flanks are treated simultaneously. However, sometimes it is not advised to do more than one area at a time. During your consultation this is something that Dr. Newman will address as the answer can vary from patient to patient.
IS LIPOSUCTION FOR WEIGHT LOSS?
Although liposuction is usually not intended as a weight-loss technique, it may be done in overweight individuals to enable them to start and maintain an exercise program along with other life-style changes, such as eating habits and stress management. Patients will see the most improvement in inches lost instead of pounds lost (fat doesn’t actually weigh that much).
WILL THE FAT RETURN?
Since the fat pockets genetically predisposed to weight gain are removed by liposuction, the amount of fat that can be stored in those areas is much less and will not return as it was before, even with weight gain. However, in order to preserve your new figure, you must maintain a stable weight with a proper diet and exercise routine.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SKIN?
In most people the skin tends to shrink and tighten to the body’s new figure. Although uncommon, in some cases where the skin does not tighten enough, one of the other minor procedures available (usually noninvasive) may be desired to achieve the optimum results.
CAN YOU LIPOSUCTION THE SAME AREA AGAIN?
Although more surgical finesse is usually needed, liposuction surgery may be repeated on the same area of the body.
