Sclerotherapy is a widely used treatment to help remove varicose veins and spider veins. During the treatment, a specific solution is injected into the vein to irritate the lining of the blood vessel causing it to collapse and disappear. You may have some slight burning and/or cramping during the injection that typically subsides in a few minutes. Typically the results will become evident in 2-3 weeks, although, if you are treating larger veins it can take 6-8 weeks. After the treatment you will have small compression bandages on the treated area and are encouraged to walk around for the next hour or so.
FAQ
Will my veins come back?
If the treatment is successful most of the time the vein does not return. Unfortunately, new veins may form over time just as they have previously.
How many treatments do I need?
Smaller veins usually only require one treatment. Larger veins may require 2-3 treatments.
Can any vein be treated?
Depending on the size and location of the vein, sclerotherapy may not be the best treatment option. For very small veins we often will recommend laser treatments. Our nurse manager will be able to advise you on the best treatment option.
