Treatments for Scar Removal / Facial Scar Removal and Acne Scar Removal
We have several different procedures available to improve the appearance of scars and to help with acne scar removal. The specific treatment will vary based on the nature, extent, and severity of the scar. These treatments can vary from laser treatments to fillers, peels and facials and the patient may need a combination of treatments. We often use facials or Newman Peels for acne scars. Depending on the depth and severity of the scar, we will not know the type of treatment or amount needed until Dr. Newman sees you in person. Scar removal treatments improve scars that are caused from acne, indented, raised, discolored, thick, or those that have not healed well. Scars are very difficult to treat, however, Dr. Newman’s experience and minimally invasive approach can essentially achieve facial scar removal by fully disguising your scar- no matter where it is! The best way to start the process of getting scar removal treatments with us in Beverly Hills is to come in for a consultation. From there Dr. Newman can assess the scar and he will come up with the best possible treatment plan to get you started.
Scars are as varied in size, shape, and appearance as they are in cause. Sometimes they arise from accident or injury, or you may need self harm scar treatment, don’t worry we are discrete. Other times scars are left over after surgery. Some are big, some are little. Some are hidden away where no one can see them, and others look you in the face every morning in the mirror. In adulthood we may be getting less acne but have the scars leftover, we can help with acne scar removal!
But all scars share one common property: they’re undesirable. The more visible scars can wound our pride and diminish self-esteem. But even smaller scars or the ones that are usually hidden beneath our clothing are unwelcome guests on our body. They are a sign of our own fragility, and often a physical reminder of a less than happy memory that caused the scar.
But the good news is that you don’t have to live with the sight of your scars forever.
While medical technology has not advanced to the point that scars can be removed completely, Dr. Newman’s scar removal techniques work to disguise scars anywhere on your body to the point that they are essentially invisible.

Scar Removal Procedure Overview
The procedures we use for scar correction are as varied as the scars themselves. Depending on the size, shape, type, and severity of the scar, Dr. Newman will employ the best method for maximum removal.
Scar removal is more like painting restoration than car repair. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. It takes an artist to return your skin to its former beauty, which is why you can trust Dr. Newman to treat you like they work of art you are. He’s a board certified dermatologist, and as a cosmetic surgeon his goal is to use the least invasive procedures to achieve the best results possible.
At your consultation, Dr. Newman will examine the nature and extent of your scar tissue in order to determine what procedures would best correct it. Our typical treatments include laser therapy, fillers, medical facials and peels. The information below will let you know a little bit about each procedure.
Laser Acne Scar Removal
In our office we offer the V-Beam Laser for a laser treatment option for acne scars. One of the common cosmetic challenges of scars is the discoloration of the damaged tissue. Skin may appear a darker red or a lighter pink than the surrounding area, for example. Laser therapy for scar removal is a non-invasive procedure with the primary goal of correcting blending pigmentation in order to restore scar tissue to your natural, beautiful color. This procedure uses a focused beam of light to treat the damaged tissue while leaving your healthy skin in tact with our non-ablative laser. Another type of scar that laser therapy can improve is acne scars. Raised or discolored acne scars can be treated with laser therapy. Even active acne can be treated with our laser therapy. Laser treatment for acne and laser treatment for acne scars are very popular treatments done in Dr. Newman’s office.
Preparing for Laser Scar Removal Therapy
While laser therapy is generally a very non-invasive procedure with minimal risks, there are several important things you should do to ensure that your skin is prepared for treatment prior to your appointment.
- To prevent irritation, refrain from using deodorants, perfumes, or similar substances on the area to be treated.
- For two weeks leading up to the procedure, avoid waxing, sun tanning (including tanning beds), collagen injections, and chemical peels.
- The procedure itself only takes a few seconds, depending on the size of the area treated
- There is no downtime with our laser treatments
Fillers
Scars often leave depressed tissue, almost like a canyon in the middle of healthy skin. We often correct such depressions with a soft-tissue filler, such as Juvederm. The filler works to stimulate collagen production and thus fill in the depressed scar tissue to smooth it out with the rest of your skin. The procedure involves injecting the filler with a miniscule needle, and some scars may require multiple treatments.
Preparing for Your Filler
The most important way to prepare for your filler treatment will be to have an open conversation with Dr. Newman during your initial consultation. It’s important for us to know if you are currently taking any regular supplements or medications, as well as to have a thorough understanding of your medical history.
Recovery After Filler Treatment
For up to a week after treatment, you may experience redness, swelling, or bruising in the treated area. Fillers are a temporary correction, so you may need to return for additional sessions anywhere from 6 to 24 months later.
Peels and Medical Facials
One way to treat scar damage on the face (such as from acne) is to remove the surface layer of skin in order to allow new, healthier skin to replace it. For this type of scar removal, Dr. Newman may decide that you may benefit from a peel or medical facial. The two treatments are similar in nature but differ in the level of strength.
Peels are meant for less severe scar tissue and involve gentle products to moisturize and clean the skin and encourage cellular regeneration.
Medical facials involve the use of stronger products in order to correct deeper scarring. With this medical grade facial treatment, Dr. Newman is able to remove the outer layer of skin so that your body will replace it with fresh, smooth, healthy skin to better mask the scar tissue.
Preparing for Peels and Medical Facials
For a peel, you don’t need to do much to prepare other than avoid excessive sun exposure and inform us of any medications you are taking.
Medical facials can be a little more in-depth, so it’s important to adhere to the following guidelines:
- Avoid anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, for one week prior to treatment.
- Let us know if you have a history of cold sores.
- If possible, come with a cleansed face or area of treatment
Recovery After Peels and Medical Facials
Peels are a very surface-level treatment and won’t require any special recovery.
Your medical facial may leave the treated area red or swollen. Sun exposure should be limited for varying periods of time depending on the depth of treatment. But don’t worry, we’ll be sure to go over everything you need to know about recovery at your appointment.

FAQ
Is there down time?
Dr. Newman recommends downtime based on the nature and extent of treatments. Most patients experience minimal swelling and bruising around the treated area for a few days. Thus, most patients resume daily activities the next day or sooner.
Will my scar disappear?
Unfortunately, once a scar has formed, that scar will always be there. However, during scar removal treatments, Dr Newman blends scar so well with the surrounding skin that they are no longer visible, essentially achieving facial scar removal.
Will I need multiple treatments?
The number of treatments required depends on the severity of the scarring. It is not unusual to require more than one treatment.
What is the cost for scar removal treatments?
The cost varies patient to patient as each treatment plan is specifically created for the individual and the type of scar. Since there are so many different options and combinations of treatments, we are not able to give an exact cost. Please call us and we can go over this information with you!
