Tummy Tuck & Mini Tuck

 ABDOMINOPLASTY

This New Year’s Resolution to shape up with diet and exercise may not be enough to give you a flat stomach with a six-pack that you hope for.  Changes in the body due to aging, pregnancy and extreme fluctuations in weight cause the abdominal muscles to stretch and weaken, yielding an abdomen that protrudes, and the skin to lose its elasticity and loosen.  Therefore, even with strenuous exercise and a strict diet we cannot achieve the flat and trim abdomen that we strive towards. Abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as “tummy tuck”, is a remarkable procedure designed to provide a long-term solution to this problem. This frequently performed procedure tightens the overly stretched abdominal muscles and skin; resulting in a slim, flat, and firm abdomen with a narrower waistline.

THE BEST CANDIDATES

The best candidates for abdominoplasty are men or women who are nonsmokers, in relatively good health, weak abdominal muscles and excess skin.  Patients who are considerably overweight are less ideal candidates for the operation and may be placed on a weight reduction program and may benefit from liposuction of the abdominal fat prior to undergoing an abdominoplasty. Women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin are ideal candidates for this procedure.

THE SURGERY

Abdominoplasty usually takes from two to five hours to perform, depending on the extent of work required.  The operation is carried out under general anesthesia in an outpatient surgery center.  A very low abdominal incision is made that is usually well hidden under a bikini.  An incision is also made to free the navel from surrounding tissue.  The abdominal muscles are tightened to provide a firmer abdominal wall and narrower waistline.  The excess skin, which may contain stretch marks and any prior surgical scars in the lower abdomen including C-section scars, is completely removed.  Finally, the incisions are closed, dressings are applied, and a temporary tube is inserted, for about five days, to drain excess fluid from the surgical site.

Some patients may require a less complex procedure called a partial abdominoplasty, also know as a mini-tummy tuck which may take only an hour or two to complete.  With partial abdominoplasty, the incision is much shorter and the navel incision is not needed.

Some patients may be candidates for Minimal Incision Endoscopic Abdominoplasty. This advanced technique uses a surgical camera to gain access through a much smaller incision to perform the surgery. Candidates for this procedure are those with loose abdominal muscle and mild excess skin.

Abdominoplasty, complete, partial or endoscopic, may sometimes be performed in conjunction with liposuction to remove excess fat deposits in order to achieve a better body contour.

AFTER YOUR SURGERY

After the surgery you are able to be taken home and are encouraged to start to walk to avoid complications like blood clots in the legs.  For the first few days, there will be abdominal swelling and discomfort. You will be prescribed medications to help control the pain and soreness.  You will be given a support garment to wear for a few weeks and you should avoid strenuous activity including straining and stretching of the abdomen for about four weeks.

THE COST

In some cases, insurance may cover the cost of abdominoplasty when the problem is considered functional or medically necessary.

YOUR NEW LOOK

Abdominoplasty, whether partial or complete, can produce excellent long lasting results enhancing your appearance and your self-confidence.  Patients should follow a balanced diet and should exercise regularly to maintain their attractive body contour. As with any other surgery, there are potential risks with abdominoplasty but they can be kept to a minimum when choosing a competent and well-trained cosmetic surgeon.
