Mesotherapy – the Latest breakthrough in cellulite reduction

Mesotherapy – the latest breakthrough in cellulite reduction

By Dr. Nathan Newman

Summer time is here and those lumps and bumps of cellulite that have been hidden away all winter now get to be exposed. What is this stuff?? Cellulite is a cosmetic defect that causes a great deal of distress for millions of women.

What Causes Cellulite?

Although no one knows exactly why or how cellulite is formed, many factors contribute to its development and appearance. Cellulite mostly affects women. The body areas that are mainly predisposed to having this defect are the buttocks and thighs.  Hormonal factors seem to play a major role in their development.  Women who have a genetic predisposition start to develop cellulite around puberty along with the hormonal changes, however cellulite may not become apparent until later in life. Other factors include weight changes, trauma to the area, decreased skin elasticity due to age and sun damage, poor blood circulation of micro-vessels, and lymphatic congestion.  With time, collagen bands attach to the underside of the skin and pull down on the skin causing dimpling and the fat in between these collagen bands tend to bulge and become “herniated” lumps giving the cottage cheese cellulite skin defect that is aesthetically undesirable.

Who Suffers From Cellulite?

Cellulite affects the majority of women over the age of 20. Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not a disease of excess weight; even slender women suffer from it.

What Is Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is the latest non-surgical breakthrough in cellulite reduction.  Like so many other popular nearly-instant beauty transformations such as BotoxÒ, CollagenÒ, and RestylaneÒ, available to us today, Mesotherapy too is a needle-based treatment, during which a cocktail of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, plant extracts and FDA-approved medications are injected into the mesoderm or middle layers of the skin, to melt away the bulging fat cells.  The “liquefied” fat is then burned as energy or excreted from the body.  Although Mesotherapy is a relatively new concept in the U.S., it was developed in Europe over 50 years ago and has since been modified, refined and improved over the years with scientific advancements to allow for a safe and proven method of cellulite reduction.

The Uses & Benefits Of Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is used for cellulite reduction, spot reduction of fat deposits in specific areas, like “love-handles”, “double-chins” and other areas where fat pockets are found.  Mesotherapy treatments improve circulation, strengthen connective tissues and dissolve excess fat thus reducing the appearance of cellulite.  Also, it is administered directly to the desired area, thus limiting side effects, reducing the possibility of drug interactions, and allowing for a substantial reduction in the amount of medicine utilized for each procedure.

The Treatment Course

The average treatment course is between 10-15 visits over a three-month period.  The procedure generally takes 30 to 60 minutes and requires no preparation or recovery time. Furthermore, no heavy bandages or girdles are used.  Mesothrapy treatments are individualized to optimize the benefits for the patient.  The majority of patients experience minimal discomfort during the treatment. For those with lower pain thresholds, a numbing cream or painkillers maybe indicated.  Side effects are generally limited to bruising and slight swelling of treated areas. Immediately following a treatment, the skin may appear red and flushed. Skin redness and swelling gradually fade over a period of hours. The bruises usually fade within one to two weeks.

How long do the benefits last?

The treated areas will remain free of unwanted fat, as long as a stable weight is maintained.  Treatments for cellulite will require maintenance on a yearly basis.

Mesotherapy is a great non-surgical method to fight the appearance of cellulite and the resistant small fat pockets that we just can’t get to go away with diet and exercise.
